A day in the life of the city of Berlin. Ruttmann unfolds images of the city, urban life and people at an alternatingly rapid and calm pace: Urban canyons, trains, streets, crowds of workers and employees, machines, neon signs, evening amusements - images assembled according to principles of movement and contrast, edited into a visual rhythm, a stream of impressions and a pulsating flow of images. With BERLIN – DIE SINFONIE DER GROSSSTADT, Ruttmann created a singular portrait of a cosmopolitan city that became the reference point for numerous later urban portraits. (mg)
